At BRPH we don’t just build structures, we set the stage to build young minds by creating forward-thinking learning environments like the one at South Lake Elementary in Titusville, Fla. The firm provided architectural and engineering design to transform this 50-year-old space into a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)-focused elementary school.

South Lake had been operating as an adult education facility in recent years, and BRPH transformed the outdated, adult-centered facility into a forward-thinking school of choice for young students — all on a tight budget.

At the start of the project, BRPH facilitated a Design Thinking workshop with school district stakeholders to identify and prioritize needs, build consensus on project success, and identify critical barriers. Through a collaborative and iterative process, key stakeholders recognized and further investigated common themes, including 21st-century learning principles, attracting and retaining students and teachers, creating high-tech, future-ready environments, promoting safety and well-being and incorporating universal and accessible design.

South Lake features a state-of-the art “SmartLab,” a fully integrated learning environment where students can explore STEAM concepts and media arts through applied technology. The school and its STEAM program has since been featured on “Good Morning America.”
