As part of a design/build team, BRPH delivered A/E services for the new Airbus A220 Final Assembly Line (FAL) facility, which produces the Airbus A220 aircraft at the company’s Mobile, Alabama, manufacturing campus. The FAL encompasses 269,000 square feet of aircraft assembly high bay, a multi-level support annex, administrative support offices, and support space. The facility supports five stations: fuselage assembly; wing assembly, wing main gear, engine strut and nose gear; vertical stabilizer and tail plane assembly; gear door assembly, equipment and system test; and interior, engine and APU installation.
BRPH worked collaboratively with stakeholder groups including Airbus and the program manager to support the technical design phase and build. The team redefined support space, shops and administration after the baseline design was defined, and interfaced directly with the client to modify logistics and component movement to determine final build positions.
A recessed loading dock provides efficient truck delivery space for smaller parts and components. Large aircraft sub-assemblies enter the high bay through vertical lift doors on the east face, while completed airframes exit through a large rolling steel hangar door system on the west face. The facility superstructure consists of pre-engineered rigid steel frames with standing seam steel roof panels over rigid board insulation on a steel deck supported by steel purlins.
The existing Logistics Building also was expanded to support continuing operations and to seamlessly integrate with new/existing structures. The building’s pre-engineered superstructure is duplicated westward to extend the existing space and provide dedicated staging to support the FAL.
