Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Pacific (NAVFAC)
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
BRPH provided architectural and engineering design services for a $19.2 million Child Development Center (CDC) at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The project was a design-build contract awarded to BRPH and construction partner, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, in Honolulu.
The 30,600-square-foot building provides 24 classrooms and community spaces for the care of 304 children from the ages of six weeks to five years. In addition to the classrooms, the facility features a full kitchen, laundry room, storage space, and administrative offices. The exterior playground is enhanced with tension fabric covers for protection from the sun.
Using a full suite of visualization tools, the BRPH design team built a virtual model of the building and electronically generated the construction documents. Antiterrorism measures and sustainable design features also were key considerations in the project design. The facility is LEED Platinum Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System.
