Designing for Multiple Species

As zoos move toward creating more authentic environments for the well-being of their animals, they’re creating more diverse habitats that mimic what life might really be like in the wild. Creating an exhibit that can house multiple species is one way zoos can accomplish this goal—and save space and budget at the same time. Zoo architect and designer, Megan Nielsen Hegstad, AIA, NCARB, Team Leader and Sr. Architect for BRPH, shares some of the innovative ways design and programming can be used to create world-class experiences not only for the animals but also for guests and zoo staff.
