Launch Complex 17B

Provision for future vehicle growth were incorporated in the design of structural modifications to Launch Complex 17B at Cape Canaveral Air Station. The launch structure was adapted for the Delta III rocket, while maintaining Delta II capability. The Mobile Service Tower (MST) was modified to accommodate various vehicle diameters and the fixed umbilical tower was modified to provide Delta III cryogenic distribution, spacecraft cooling, and deluge water for overpressure suppression. Large flame ducts and a new 25-ton bridge crane were added, as well as a specialized wire rope deflector system which replaced five existing 10-ton hoists, performing the functions of each.
